RENO, NV - Doctors are warning about a dangerous diet trend that's gaining popularity through social media and websites like YouTube.
Teens are actually swallowing cotton balls to lose weight.
YouTube videos show teens soaking cotton balls in orange juice, then swallowing them. The idea behind the dangerous trend is that they'll feel full after eating the cotton balls.
Registered Dietician-Nutritionist Barbara Cox says she hasn't seen patients with the disorder, but says a lot of people get ideas from the internet that can be dangerous.
She warns that cotton balls can expand in your stomach, and your body may not be able to pass them. This can cause a dangerous blockage, which might require surgery. In extreme cases, part of the colon might have to be removed.
Doctor John Dolores says eating disorders are more common than people realize. More than 10 million people suffer from one.
