When KFC, a division of Yum Brands Inc., offered coupons online for a free meal, some of its stores ran out and traffic threatened to get out of hand at some locations.
After dishing up more than 4 million free meals the first few days, the company began offering rain checks on the meal, intended as a more health-conscious alternative to its popular fried chicken.
Here are the basics on Kentucky Grilled Chicken.
LAUNCH DATE: April 19
COUPONS POSTED ONLINE: May 2 for 24 hours
THE DEAL: Two pieces of KFC's new grilled chicken, two side items and a biscuit, normally a $3.99 meal.
THE RAIN CHECK: Customers who receive a rain check will also get a free drink.
NUTRITION BOTTOM LINE: Each piece of its grilled chicken, depending on size, has 70 to 180 calories; 4 to 9 grams of fat; 160 to 440 milligrams of sodium. Each piece of KFC fried chicken has 110 to 370 calories; 7 to 21 grams of fat; 290 to 1,050 milligrams of sodium.
