When finances are tight many families make sacrifices to get by. Thanks to the generosity of local dentists though hundreds of kids will get the care they need even if their families can't afford it. The Northern Nevada Dental Society has been providing free or reduced cost care to underprivileged kids since the 1980’s. Now the Jason Eberle Memorial Fund is aimed at improving and expanding the organizations ability to help kids in this struggling economy.
Jason Eberle was a pediatric dentist who had provided care in Elko. In May, at just 37-years-old, he passed away suddenly. The cause of his death could not be determined, leaving his family struggling to make sense of the loss.
Eberle’s father Joseph is also a dentist, working in Reno for about 50 years. He decided to start a memorial fund that would help expand care for kids, and Jason's legacy. Money donated to the memorial fund covers the cost of materials needed to provide dental care for kids who might otherwise go without.
Over 100 local doctors donate their time and services through the Northern Nevada Dental Society. Program organizers say they treated about 460 kids just last year. With rising unemployment numbers, they are predicting the need will be even greater this year.
The program covers kids who are uninsured, have Northern Nevada Medicaid, or northern Nevada check-up.
