RENO, NV--The Washoe County Department of Health says there are 14 confirmed cases of the flu in Washoe County.
Phil Ulibarri with the Health Department says that number is low compared to other places in the country.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the strain that is circulating throughout the country is causing people to be severely ill.
In fact, about 6.3% of those who were diagnosed with the flu last week died. That's just below what the CDC considers an epidemic.
None of the deaths were children.
Right now, most of the cases are in the South. While we haven't seen a major uptick yet here in Nevada, cases are sporadic but it is capable of spreading.
The CDC is recommending you wash your hands frequently, cover your cough, stay home if you're sick, and most importantly they say, get vaccinated.
Nevada ranks the lowest in the nation for people who get vaccinated, just under 33% last season.
