RENO, Nev. -- Local yoga instructors are volunteering their time to help women in custody at the sheriff's detention facility in north Reno.

It's part of the Women's Empowerment Program at the jail. The hope is these classes will help inmates manage stress, anger and other negative emotions... and prevent actions that could lead them back to jail.

It started up in May and the instructors say it didn't take long to see some positive effects.

"I think we make progress. Even within the hour its really amazing to watch the women start feeling somewhat anxious and maybe a little bit rattled and by the end of the hour typically they're very relaxed and there's a sense of calm we see come over them."

The classes meet twice a month. It is an all volunteer effort so there is no cost to taxpayers.
