RENO, Nev. (AP) - A woman who pleaded guilty to killing her friend when she passed out while driving intoxicated has been sentenced to two to five years in prison.
It has been reported that 23-year-old Vanessa Cervantes of Yerington pleaded guilty to driving under the influence causing death for the July 5 crash that killed 20-year-old Whitney Lynn Thompson, who was a passenger in the car.
Prosecutors had asked for a prison term of four to 10 years.
But the victim's mother asked for the minimum sentence, saying
she didn't want two lives to be ruined. Cervantes was sentenced
Friday by Washoe District Judge Scott Freeman.
The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Sparks Boulevard.
Authorities say Cervantes fell asleep and crashed through a brick
wall. Thompson died at the scene.
