Working in the Winter

RENO, Nev. - Temperatures have been colder than average for the past few days. While many people spend most of their days warm inside, some people are exposed to the cold all day long.

Max Wiswell started his day at 7 a.m.

"It's cold," he said. "It's warming up now, but this morning it was brisk."

Wiswell is a plumber for Beutler Corporation, and was working on a few homes being built. He said he normally works indoors, but was filling in for someone. Wiswell says he sees a change in the pace of his work depending on the temperature.

"You move slower," he said. "You know everything is cold so it just doesn't work as well."

Juan Moncada knows exactly what Wiswell is talking about. Moncada spends up to 7 hours a day delivering mail.

"I've only been here a month and a half, so this is the coldest I've been," Moncada said.

With high and low temperatures below average for this time of year, you may expect these workers to be complaining. But that's not the case.

"It's not too bad," John Cuzdey said. "It's what we do."

Cusdey works for United Site Services. Today he was at the same construction site as Wiswell, helping to keep the area clean.

They all agree working in the cold isn't ideal, but there's one trick to staying warm.

"If you're working, it tends to off-set the cold," Wiswell said.

Cuzdey agreed.

"You just keep moving, and as soon as you're done get right back in the warm vehicle," he said.

"If I have to stand for any one time then it gets cold," Moncada said.

Of course layering up is the first defense against the cold. All men had at least three layers or a giant company jacket on.

The cold winter temperatures are expected to last. Stay warm and if you are outside for an extended period of time, make sure to bundle up. With the low temperatures, the chance for frostbite or hypothermia increases.
