RENO, Nev. (AP) - A veteran Washoe County prosecutor has been appointed as a district judge in Reno.
Gov. Brian Sandoval announced his selection Friday of 46-year-old Elliott Sattler to replace retiring District Judge Steven Elliott.
Sattler joined the district attorney's office in 1993. He's currently a senior trial deputy attorney who deals with litigation as a member of the felony trial team.
He was the prosecutor who secured the death sentence for James Biela, convicted of the 2008 rape and murder of college student Brianna Denison in Reno.
Nine other lawyers applied for Elliott's post.
Elliott's retirement is effective Tuesday.
Sattler, a graduate of the Willamette University College of Law in Oregon, unsuccessfully ran against District Judge Robert Perry in 2008.
