RENO, Nev. (AP) - A U.S. district judge in Reno is trying to decide whether Nevada lobbyist Harvey Whittemore can proceed with a $60 million lawsuit against his former business partners in federal court separate from an ongoing legal battle in state court in Las Vegas.
Lawyers for the Seeno family of Northern California who filed the original lawsuit in Clark County accuse Whittemore of "forum shopping" for a more favorable judge.
But Whittemore's lawyer told Judge Larry Hicks Wednesday that the Whittemores have a right to protect their rights in federal court and that they live in the Reno area so it's the logical place to hear the case.
Hicks said he hopes to have a preliminary ruling by the end of Wednesday. He planned to meet with lawyers again at 3 p.m.
