RENO -- The University of Nevada, Reno announced plans for a new fitness center Monday. The E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center would be located between the parking garage and Lawlor Events Center, where there is currently a parking lot. The facility will be more than 110-thousand square feet.
UNR president Marc Johnson said the fifth largest gift in university history, $8 million from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, helped make the project possible. He said another $8 million still needs to be raised. Johnson said students are already paying a capital construction fee with their tuition, and the funds will be used to build the center. He said the funding is possible after UNR finished paying the debt on a fire training center. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $46.3 million. There would also be a $15 fee per student per semester, according to UNR.
It's hoped the new fitness center will be completed in late 2016. The fitness center will feature three basketball courts, a 1/8 mile track and a weightlifting area.
