UPDATE: There will be a public memorial service for Matt and Elizabeth Bergman this Saturday, March 10th, at Wooster High School in the big gym at 2pm.
RENO, NV - The community is mourning the loss of two Washoe County School District students. Matt and Elizabeth Bergman died as a result of injuries from a fire at their apartment on South Wells Avenue on Thursday, authorities said.

Matt Bergman was a student at Wooster High School, and administrators said he was well-known for playing basketball. Elizabeth Bergman was a student at Vaughn Middle School.

"Counselors are walking around making sure (the students are) doing okay, we're checking on them," School Counselor Erin Danielsen said.

Fire investigators said fire was caused by burning incense, which was left unattended by the kids' mother. The flames spread to other combustible items, Captain Tray Palmer said.

The kids' mother remains hospitalized with burn wounds.

Firefighters added the building, built in 1940, was up-to-code. However, a smoke detector was missing a battery, Palmer said.

A makeshift memorial has emerged near South Wells.

Residents of the apartment building where the fire happened remain evacuated. They will not be permitted to return for a month, Palmer said. The American Red Cross is providing assistance.
