Truckee Meadows Litter Index Shows Area Improvement

RENO, NV -- How clean is your neighborhood? Local volunteers are getting down and dirty, surveying the Truckee Meadows to find out. More than 20 volunteers went out Wednesday evening to survey neighborhoods, open spaces and even freeways in the Truckee Meadows, rating each area on a scale of one to four with four being the dirtiest. How did the Truckee Meadows fare this year?

"The area here is a nice area and just getting the message out that it's not that hard just picking up some litter and putting it in its right proper place," Gary Meckler, a volunteer and project manager, said.

Volunteers from Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) are scouting the town for litter. Meckler has been doing it for 9 years.

"I want to give back to the community that we live in," he said. "I want to take pride in where we live and i figure it was an easy way of doing it."

Meckler and his team surveyed northeast and southwest Reno, some of the dirtiest areas in town, according to last year's results.

"That would probably be the area that I would think would have the most trash and it means people are taking pride in their neighborhoods," Kathy McHenry a first-time surveyor said.

The volunteers are comparing the amount of garbage from this year to last year to gauge the cleanliness of the Truckee Meadows, using the results to plan community clean-ups in the future. Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful hopes this can make cleanliness a habit in the community.

"It's like wearing your seat belt, at first people fought it and now you do it without even thinking. so now we hope that to put garbage in its place without even thinking and just doing it."

Overall, the Truckee Meadows went from a 1.7 to a 1.6 showing it is slightly cleaner than last year. Illegal dumping has been a huge problem on Pyramid Way in the past but results show that the area is significantly cleaner.

As a reminder, if you get caught dumping trash illegally, it could land you a misdemeanor.

The next community clean-up is September 28th.
