HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - Nevada's close Senate race is becoming a national test of whether ethics or the future of Medicare matters more to voters.
Democratic congresswoman Shelley Berkley is attacking Republican Sen. Dean Heller for supporting Paul Ryan's plan to remake Medicare into a voucher system for some future seniors. Heller's blasting back with an ad that accuses Berkley of voting to cut $1 trillion in Medicare and is calling her corrupt.
Medicare and ethics resonate in Nevada, home of the nation's highest unemployment rate and where 12 percent of the population is over age 65. The man who once held the seat, former Sen. John Ensign, resigned in 2011 after an ethics investigation into his affair with a staffer's wife.
Republicans must gain four seats to win the Senate majority.
