INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) - Former Vice President Al Gore says the cooperation that is helping to protect Lake Tahoe is a model for what can be accomplished in battling climate change.

Gore returned to the lake in the Sierra Nevada Monday, 16 years after he and former President Bill Clinton ushered in a new awareness on the need to protect Lake Tahoe's delicate ecosystem. He gave the keynote address at the 17th annual Tahoe Summit, held this year at Sand Harbor State Park.

Gore and Clinton attended the first forum held in 1997 that drew international attention to the lake straddling the Nevada-California line.

Since then, nearly $1.7 billion in public and private money has been spent on various projects to control runoff, combat invasive species and reduce air pollution.
