As part of our partnership with the 2013 Tahoe Rim Trail Challenge, KOLO 8 News Now has assembled a team that will be tackling each Challenge Section this summer, there are six in all.
If you are interested in joining us in supporting this amazing local hiking, biking and equestrian trail, you can sign up for the challenge, and perhaps get some great prizes as well.
Here is what KOLO 8 News Now's Pat Hambright found as he visited a Challenge Section near Echo Summit:
July 4th, 2013
When I pulled into the parking area at the Echo Lake Marina, I must admit I briefly thought this was a mistake.
More cars then I could count were shoved anywhere and everywhere possible.
I figured it would be busy, being the 4th of July, but this seemed a bit much. However I made an attempt at finding an open spot, and was lucky enough to locate one right next to the trail head leading directly to the Marina.
The amount of cars made me believe that the trail itself would be packed, and my plan to run the 6.5 miles Lakes and Glacial Terrain Challenge might not be possible.
However, after crossing the dam, I quickly left the crowds behind and found open trail.
As described Echo Lake is home to several very nice lakeside cabins, which are only accessible by trail or boat. The trail itself quickly climbs above them, then levels out for consistent views of both the lake and vacation homes.
Occasionally I would encounter a backpacker, trekker, or fisherman. But for the most part the crowds were traveling by boat, and despite the obvious number of people who were nearby, the trail itself wasn't crowded.
I made good time, and enjoyed the transitions from stunning lake views, to jagged sierra crags, to quiet tree covered sections of trail surrounded by wildflowers.
The Desolation Wilderness Boundary arrived sooner than I expected, and in my opinion, just as the terrain became more appealing.
All in all a very nice, and well maintained stretch of trail, that just about anyone could enjoy...I know I did.
Log me in as having completed Section #6, only 5 more to go!
