Reno, NV - Washoe County School District Superintendent Heath Morrison got a big surprise at what he thought was one of his regular Brown Bag Lunch sessions: a congratulatory party.

School and community leaders were on hand at the Discovery Museum when Dr. Morrison walked into the room Thursday. They applauded him for being chosen as the American Association of School Administrators' 2012 Superintendent of the Year.

There were brown sandwich bags stamped with "congratulations" on them.

Dr. Morrison said he was surprised when he got the honor, just like he was Thursday when he saw a roomful of people congratulating him. He said being named Superintendent of the Year was humbling and he said the best part was being able to share our story with people around the country.

"To talk about what's happening here," he said. "To talk about the hard work of our employees, our principals, our teachers, our support staff, our board - and that's been the best part of this is to really tell the Washoe County School District story."

Dr. Morrison said he hopes our story will inspire other districts that are having a tough time during these lean budget years.
