Students Write to Teachers in Light of Sparks Shooting

WASHOE COUNTY -- Students at Truckee Meadows Community College wrote letters to educators who inspired them. The assignment was in light of the tragic events at Sparks Middle School Monday.

"I have no intention of reading these," instructor Michelle Montoya said. Instead, she said she intends to deliver the letters to the Washoe County School District.

"Although I feared your class it was my favorite class in high school," Michael Benincasa said he wrote to a former teacher.

Michael Landsberry, who was killed trying to protect students during the shooting at Sparks Middle School, graduated from Truckee Meadows Community College.

"You never know when you are going to lose someone," Benincasa said.

Brianna Trimmer said: "I had (Mr. Nelson) for honors English and he works for Churchill County High School... if it had been him who died, I wish I would have told him all of what I wrote today."

Many of the letters express gratitude. Students said they hope others will be inspired to tell educators who much of a difference they have made in their lives.
