RENO, NV - Stewie the Cat, who became famous as the Guinness Book record holder for being the longest domestic cat, has passed away.
KOLO 8 News Now spoke with Stewie's owner Robin Hendrickson who confirmed Stewie's passing around 7 p.m. Monday.
Stewie had been battling cancer. On Christmas Day 2012, Robin took him to an emergency vet after a mass was found behind his eye. Several Weeks later, he was given a biopsy by Eye Care for Animals, and later told he was facing Lymphosarcoma, a malignant disease of the lymphoid tissues. A fund was set up to raise money for Stewie's medical care.
The Maine Coon cat was known across the country for his title of Guinness World Record Holder for the Longest Domestic Cat, measuring 48.5 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.
His owner says he was a special guy who touched many lives, and up until last weekend, was bringing joy to some of his fans in Portland, Oregon.
Stewie the Cat was 8 years old.
