LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada public safety officials say they think the state is better prepared for disasters and diseases than the low ranking it received in a national report.
State emergency management chief Chris Smith and public safety director Chris Perry said Wednesday they think the annual "Ready or Not?" report sells the state short.
Nevada tied with Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii and New Jersey - above only Kansas and Montana on a 10-point scale.
The state officials cite efforts like sandbagging and resource deployment earlier this month ahead of predictions that a wet storm would cause flooding along the Truckee River.
The report by the nonpartisan Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation points to gaps in readiness for extreme weather emergencies, bioterrorist threats and serious disease outbreaks.
