SPARKS, Nev. - Stand-up paddleboarding is a sport that's skyrocketing in popularity, and it's even going to be in the next Summer Olympics.
Our area is a mecca for paddleboarders, say experts.
Paddleboarding started out as an ocean sport, and now a local company is making boards that work really well in fresh water lakes.
They say it's a sport you can learn how to do in just five minutes.
"If you learn how to paddle correctly, then you can just get out there and just go and have a great time, and it's five minutes," said Mike Tessier, co-owner of Lakeshore Paddleboard Company. "That's the exciting thing about this. It's not like any other sport."
Scheels says paddleboard sales are way up, and they say it's a great workout.
"It's going to work your core muscles, it works your stabilizing muscles. You have to work with your balance, so it really works your upper body, your lower body, and your core," said MK Udrovich, the Camping Manager at Scheels.
Most paddleboard companies make boards for the ocean, but Lakeshore's boards are specially made for the lakes in the Sierra Nevada area. They even adjust for altitude.
"They're thicker, they're wider, there's less rocker," said Tessier.
And that means you have a better chance of not falling off!
The boards look heavy, but they're hollow, and they have a handle in the middle, so they're easy to carry. It's a sport for all ages.
"Once they get out, they enjoy it. We have from a 5-year-old, to an 87-year-old can get on the board and just enjoy the sport. It's just, it's beautiful," said Tessier.
But that doesn't always mean it's easy.
"You're going out, you're hitting buoy turns, you're coming back into the beach, you're doing runs, you're going back out. And it's exciting," said Tessier. "This is an extreme, powerful sport."
Some paddleboarders are taking the sport to other levels. In Tahoe, they hold yoga classes out on the water on the paddleboards.
