RENO, Nev. (AP) - A former special education teacher has been
sentenced to 60 days in jail and given a two-year suspended prison
sentence for having sex with a 17-year-old student.
The Reno-Gazette-Journal reports 35-year-old Bethyl Shepherd blamed her bi-polar mental disorder for her sexual misconduct. Shepherd was a special education teacher at Reed High School.
She was sentenced Thursday by Washoe District Judge David Hardy,
who noted that Shepherd told a mental health evaluator that she had
oral sex with about seven male students, ages 15 to 17.
Hardy also placed Shepherd on probation for five years.
Shepherd apologized in court, saying she's sorry for the pain she's caused.
She pleaded guilty earlier to one of two counts of unlawful sexual conduct between a school employee and pupil, a felony.
