Defendants in last November’s Spanish Springs animal hoarding case was scheduled for sentencing at Sparks Justice Court Thursday but have given a reprieve

The judge in the case is giving the alleged hoarders one more month to bring their home up to acceptable standards.

Lauretta Nawojski, and her sister, Jacki Haney, were charged with animal cruelty after authorities removed 44 cats and 4 dogs from their Spanish Springs home on Chula Vista Drive in November 2010.

The judge reviewed the orders given at the last hearing in May and a final decision will be made regarding the disposition of the remaining 7 cats and 3 dogs.

Nawojski said the allegations were lies and that the animals were all in good condition except for some cats suffering colds. They have since pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and as part of the plea agreement are seeking the return of 3 dogs and 7 cats.

Most of the animals suffered from medical problems ranging from moderate to serious in nature. Nevada Humane Society has requested that animals not be returned to the defendants.

What is wrong with this screwed up system. They are wack jobs who have another house full of cats. They have refused to let animal control into the house because of that and the judge is still considering giving them back some of the same cats they tortured? They deserve to be in jail for at least a year. When is the system going to acually make these slime accountable for what they do? Not to mention the tax payers are on the hook for the bill to repair and house all of the animals for 7 months and the unfortunate ones still in limbo. The bill continues to expand.

Thank you so much for bring this issue to our attention. I'm a researcher for the series Confessions: Animal Hoarding, currently airing on Animal Planet that tells the stories of people overwhelmed by the number of pets they own. The problem is on the rise and affect communities across America. If you are concerned about the health of animals in someone's care and suspect they may be hoarding them, we might be able to help. Most animal hoarders don’t see themselves as hoarders, and sometimes don’t intentionally collect animals. Their relationship with their animals has threatened their relationships with friends and family. Most of these situations aren’t dealt with until they become criminal. This results in animals being euthanized by over-stressed shelters, and doesn’t address the underlying psychological issues - meaning nearly 100% of people end up in the same situation again. We are dedicated to finding comprehensive long-term solutions and believe therapy to be key to this. We can bring in experts to help people and their pets. If you or someone you know needs help because animals have overrun their life, visit www.animalhoardingproject.com to learn more and submit their story.
