SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA – South Lake Tahoe Police are warning against possible identity theft. According to police, a credit card “skimmer” device was used at the Safeway gas station at the corner of U.S. Highway 50 and Takela Ave. During their investigation they found more than one victim of identity theft.
A skimmer is a device that's used to steal credit card information and it could be installed inside or outside a fuel dispenser. The device lets a thief capture a customer's credit and debit card information, including their PIN, with just one swipe.
SLTPD says there are no longer any skimming devices at any of the Safeway gas pumps. Police urge you to look over your credit or debit card information is you bought fuel from that gas station in the month of February.
