RENO, NV -- Area children enjoyed a boarding contest Saturday designed to help students improve their grades. This was the second year for the "making the grade" skate tournament at Mira Loma park. More than 60 students competed for a chance to win a week of camp at Woodward Tahoe.
Participants must have at least a 2.8 GPA to enter the contest, and their grades are factored into their final skate score. A local dentist organizes the event every year.
He says it's a way to give back to the community and blend action sports with academics.
"I grew up in the area and was blessed to be exposed to action sports and was fortunate enough to go to dental school. I decided I wanted to give back and motivate some of these kids that are at risk, motivate them academically. We may not all be able to do sports professionally but we can all make a better life through academics," said David White, DDS/Creator and Lead Sponsor.
Dozens of sponsors help make the contest possible each year.
