RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 17-year-old gang member in Reno has been sentenced to six to 15 years in a shooting that left an innocent Sparks man paralyzed from his chest down.
Washoe District Court Judge Scott Freeman sentenced Sergio Aquino to the maximum sentence Tuesday for the December shooting of 32-year-old Jason Carthagena.
Aquino earlier pleaded guilty to battery with a deadly weapon causing bodily harm.
Police say Aquino shot Carthagena because he was wearing a red jacket and thought he was in a rival gang. But investigators say the victim was just a fan of the San Francisco 49ers and wearing their team gear. They say he'll be in a wheelchair the rest of his life.
