RENO, NV - In light of several recent attacks, including one on a senior, Pierce Toomey of United Studio of Self Defense showed several moves older individuals can learn.

"Self defense is pretty basic there's a lot you can do as a martial artist or anybody as far as punches and kicks go," he said.

Toomey showed how fingers could be used to hit an attacker's throat to cause pain. He also showed how a firm stance can help you get away from an attacker.

He said it's best to avoid a confrontation. "If you're walking through a parking lot, look through the windows, see the reflection."

The Sparks Police Department is also urging increased awareness of surroundings following the attacks. SPD also said you may want to consider increasing your home's security.

Toomey said self defense moves take practice in order to maintain the skills.
