RENO - The DMV wants all drivers to be aware of a new phone scam going around Northern Nevada.
In this scam, the caller claims to be with the Department of Motor Vehicles and offers an insurance deal. If the driver doesn't want to take the deal, the caller threatens to suspend that person's registration.
There have been several reports of this scam. The DMV wants you to know this is not a legitimate call. Most contact from the DMV will be via regular mail, not over the phone.
The phone number of the scammer has been traced to Northern Nevada. Troy Dillard, from the DMV, told KOLO 8, "We put in a call to the number given to us. An individual did answer and offered us insurance for less money. When we said we were with the DMV he hung up."
All of the information about this scam has been turned over to the Attorney General's office. If you get a call, you should contact the Attorney General as well.
