UPDATE: It was a tense afternoon in one Reno neighborhood as
police officers surrounded an apartment complex after they got a call a man was trying to hurt and possibly kidnap kids.
"I was hiding behind the block, so everything was fine," says Elias Soumitte who lives near Century Park Apartments on Stoddard.
Soumitte and other neighbors circled police tape at Century Park wondering what was going on.
William Baker lives near the apartment complex and watched the scene as it unfolded.
"All the police, all the K-9 and all the police officers are hiding behind the trees with rifles like assault weapons and everything," says Baker.
Reno police tell us that a man was intoxicated and damaged some property at the apartment complex.
Witnesses told police they saw the man try to hurt and grab children.
Police thought the man barricaded himself in an upstairs apartment, and were prepared for the worst.
"They had their rams, they had their shields, and they were on the loud speaker telling the guy to come out of his unit, if he didn't then they were going to breach his apartment," says Baker.
A step Reno P.D. later realized they did not have to take. Just before 4:30 Saturday afternoon, the officers put their weapons away, packed up and left.
They say they didn't have evidence of the man having a weapon or hurting children. They believe he was passed out or asleep inside the apartment. It was still a scary scene for neighbors.
While we were there, KOLO 8 and others were asked to move three times, to get out of the line of fire.
"It was a big scene with no result," says Soumitte.
Police are leaving the scene at a Stoddard Way apartment building, where an armed man was reported to be barricaded inside.
Police say they now think that the man did not have a gun.
They also think initial reports that a child was inside the apartment are false.
The situation is still under investigation.
