SPARKS, Nev. -- Sparks Police officers issued dozens of citations Friday as part of their continuous effort to keep the streets safe and ensure drivers and pedestrians follow all traffic laws.

Officers focused on traffic violations in and around intersections. In all, they handed out 52 citations and arrested one person for drug possession. Most of the citations, 21 in all, involved drivers running red lights. Other citations included jay-walking and various other offenses.

Department officials chose to focus on violations surrounding intersections because a study which looked at 688 traffic accidents, including 5 fatal crashes, from July 2012 to January 2013 showed many of the accidents happened at intersections and were due to drivers running red lights or stop signs.

Officers working on this operation were funded by a grant from the Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety. They will be conducting similar operations in the future.

Sparks Police Department officials would like to "remind motorists to pay attention when approaching an intersection, reduce your speed, and when a light turns yellow it is meant to warn you to slow down and prepare to stop, not to accelerate in an attempt to beat the light turning red."
