RENO, Nev. (AP) - According to a report, Reno-area roads are among the nation's roughest, costing drivers $771 a year in additional vehicle operating costs.

The report, issued Thursday by the Washington-based national transportation research group TRIP, says 55 percent of Reno-area roads are in poor condition compared with only 11 percent in Las Vegas.

Reno ranks second out of 62 cities with populations between 250,000 and 500,000 in both the percentage of roads in poor condition and in additional vehicle operating costs.

Las Vegas ranks 67th out of 75 urban areas with populations of over 500,000 in percentage of roads in poor condition.

City of Reno officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

TRIP says a lack of federal funding threatens the future condition of the nation's roads and highways.
