Habitual criminal, Dale Vogelaar was sentenced to a 5 to 20 year prison term this on Friday Jan. 13 after one final crime, a crime against himself.
Vogelaar had 7 prior felony convictions and was on parole. Then, officers say he violated the terms of his release in July of last year. So, detectives with the Northern Nevada Repeat Offender Program went out to find him. They caught up with Vogelaar during a traffic stop Sun Valley and tried to take him into custody with the help of Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputies. But Vogelaar bolted and led law enforcement on a high speed chase into California.
Vogelaar drove more than 90 miles per hour on US 395 towards Susanville. Local police stopped chasing him and used Washoe County's helicopter to track him south of Susanville.
That is where California Highway Patrol got in on the chase and stuck some spike strips in Vogelaar's path. That was all it took to end the pursuit. But then something else shocking and unexpected happened.
Vogelaar got out of the car he was driving and started stabbing himself several times. CHP officers were able to disarm him and take him into custody. Vogelaar was treated at an area hospital for his self inflicted injuries.
The Northern Nevada Repeat Offender Program includes detectives from the Reno and Sparks Police Departments.
