RENO, Nev. (AP) - The city of Reno is proceeding with plans to lay off about 80 firefighters because of the pending breakup between the city and Washoe County over fire services.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the City Council on Wednesday authorized written layoff notices to be prepared.
The exact date of when the notices will be sent was left to the discretion of City Manager Andrew Clinger.
Washoe County plans to start its own fire department, including the Truckee Meadows and Sierra fire protection districts, on July 1.
City officials say they want to give affected firefighters as much time as possible to make other career plans.
