RENO, Nev. (AP) - A candidate for Reno mayor is asking the Nevada Supreme Court to prohibit City Council members who were termed out from running for the city's top office.
In a petition filed with the high court on Friday, George "Eddie" Lorton argues the 12-year term limits that will be in effect for both Councilman Dwight Dortch and former Councilwoman Jessica Sferrazza should prevent them from running for mayor.
Lorton argues the law approved by voters in 1994 and 1996 was intended to "stop career politicians" and "reduce the power of lobbyists and special interests.
The Reno Gazette-Journal (http://on.rgj.com/1ekNuBj ) reports the petition also notes conflicting opinions issued by the Nevada attorney general's office and the Legislative Counsel Bureau.
