Reno Charities Need Your Support on "Giving Tuesday"

Updated: Tue 5:10 AM, Nov 27, 2012

RENO, NV -- Local charities are hoping for a boost on the first "Giving Tuesday." After "Black Friday" and "Small Business Saturday," Tuesday is a time people are being encouraged to support charities.

"It's really supposed to fight consumerism and here at the Red Cross we are really encouraging people to give something that means something," Karli Epstein of the Reno American Red Cross chapter said.

The American Red Cross is one of the charities that is a founding partner in the day of giving. "Giving Tuesday" comes in the wake of the super-storm that hit several states.

Bonney Brown, the executive director of the Nevada Humane Society, said she is also hoping people will support homeless animals on Tuesday. She said monetary donations are needed, but so is cat food. Brown added even volunteers to walk dogs are appreciated this holiday season.

Those participating in "Giving Tuesday" are also encouraged to spread the word on social media, including the phrase: "#givingtuesday."
