SPARKS, NV - Some lucky kids spent the day after Christmas learning the fundamentals of basketball from the pros.
The Reno Bighorns KIds Basketball Camp drew a few dozen enthusiastic boys and girls to the Alf Sorenson Community Center in Sparks Wednesday.
After a morning session of fundamentals, the kids were ready to try some new skills in afternoon scrimmages. The lessons took as some youthful playmakers were dribbling and passing in a sometimes impressive transition game, all under the watchful eye of Bighorns Assistant Coach Deane Martin.
"We emphasize team play," says Martin. "and at the end of the day we want them to enjoy the experience, so they'll take it home and practice it at home by themselves."
The kids were clearly having fun as was Martin, who noted he was once a youngster learning from a coach and this was a way of paying back.
Every attendee received a ticket to a Bighorns game.
The Reno Bighorns are an NBA D-League member.
