LAS VEGAS (AP) - In 1982, Michael Jackson released "Thriller," the Rubik's Cube swept the nation and Nevadans elected 41-year-old Harry Reid to represent them in Congress.

As the year changed over on Tuesday, Reid became the longest-serving member of Congress in the state's history.

Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Roberta Lange congratulated the 73-year-old senate majority leader Wednesday. Lange says Reid is one of the most effective representatives in state history.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Reid takes the longevity record from Nevada Republican John Percival Jones. Jones served in the U.S. Senate from 1873 to 1903.

Reid's colleagues in the Capitol honored him Wednesday. Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin, of Illinois, says Reid has become part of the history of his state.
