RENO - Rainshadow Community Charter High School will close at the end of the school year.

KOLO 8 News Now has obtained a letter sent home with students this week.

In it, the school's principal cites the economy as the main issue for shuttering the school.

Steve West says five years ago, the entire staff took a five percent pay cut because of Nevada's reduction in per pupil funding.

And each year, Rainshadow's expenses have increased while funding has stayed the same.

In fact, on the school's fundraising website West says teachers have been leaving the school because Rainshadow's salaries are lower than the school districts.

The school is projected to be $200 thousand short for next year's school budget. Unless that money can be raised, the board of directors of RCCHS voted to close in June.

This year, Rainshadow cut its culinary arts program in half due to budget. The school feeds all students for free. The website says it needs to get that program back up to full speed.
