RENO, NV - Police in Reno are releasing more details about a man they say has been going on crime sprees throughout our area. He targets big box stores and uses shopping carts in his crimes.
“I think it’s really bizarre. Like how can you miss a 400 pound guy loading up a cart and running out with all this stuff,” says Donna Anderson, a shopper in Reno. “I think that’s unbelievable.”
But that’s exactly what’s happening around Reno. Police say there’s a man going around from store to store and getting away with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.
“This guy’s going into our major department stores and taking tvs, electronics, anything of value… throwing it in a shopping cart and either rushing out the emergency door or the front door to an awaiting vehicle. And taking off with all the merchandise,” says Sgt. Patrick Dreelan with the Reno Police Department.
Police say the man’s been doing this since mid-August. He’s hit five Wal-Marts in Reno, the Ross on Kietzke, and a Burlington Coat Factory. He’s also hit up the Target in Reno. At the Target in Sparks, police say people tried to run after him, but he got away, thanks to a getaway car outside.
“He is a Pacific Islander, Tongan male. He’s about 6 feet tall, 330 to 420 has been the reported weight. So obviously he’s a pretty big guy. Tattoos from his shoulders down to his wrists,” says Sgt. Dreelan.
A lot of people around town say they wouldn’t try to stop him. He’s much too big.
