Proposal Seeks Illegal Immigrant Driving Privilege

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Incoming state Senate Majority Leader Mo Denis has proposed a law allowing driver privilege cards for illegal immigrants and others hoping to bypass the stricter requirements of a driver's license.

Denis says the privilege card would allow people to drive legally and get insurance, but couldn't be used for identification. The Democratic lawmaker from Las Vegas says the measure could help curb hit-and-runs that happen when a driver is unlicensed and doesn't want to get caught.

The Las Vegas Sun reports several Democratic lawmakers have signed on as co-sponsors, but no Republicans have yet.

Tuesday's proposal comes a week after the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles announced it would authorize driver's licenses for young immigrants brought to the country illegally as children and granted temporary reprieve by President Obama.
