Prepare Your Car For Winter

RENO, NV - At Greg's Garage, mechanics are already getting requests to winterize cars.

And they've already located some problem spots like belts, or hoses with tiny holes that can cause big problems.

“Because your system works under pressure and so any time there is a leak anywhere or a hole, it's going to look for the leak. Belts and hoses are very important. If a belt breaks nowadays you are pretty much stuck; you can't go anywhere,” says Wes Johnson with Greg's.

Right now Interstate 80 west over Donner is clear.

But it's only a matter of time before it looks like a winter wonderland, or mess, depending upon your preparedness.

Something as simple as good working windshield wipers and tires with tread can't be over-emphasized.

Underneath the hood, check your coolant, oil, windshield and wiper fluid.

And if you need to replace them make sure the coolant and wiper fluid are temperature-appropriate--meaning they can handle temperatures below zero.

Johnson recommends carrying additional windshield cleaner in the car as you can run out quickly in winter conditions.

And be sure to buy chains down here and carry them with's a lot cheaper than making the purchase up on the summit.

Along with the chains, carry a blanket and additional coat and gloves and water.

You'll never know when you need them.
