Reno's Main Post Office and Regional Distribution Center
Reno, Nev. - The postal distribution center on Vassar Street was being considered for closure, but will remain open, Senator Reid announced Thursday morning.
The decision to keep it open will save 177 jobs, and keep mail operations the way they are now.
Closing the plant could have hurt small businesses by slowing mail delivery. The plan was to truck the mail to Sacramento for sorting, but that would have added about a day to even local mail delivery time.
The Vassar Street distribution center was one of 250 distribution centers across the country being considered for closure, a move that would consolidate operations to save money.
Senator Reid announced Thursday morning that he'd spoken with the Postal Service, telling them the move just didn't make sense. They agreed, and the distribution center will remain open.
However, it's not all good news for Northern Nevada. The plant in Elko will close, and mail operations taken to Salt Lake City. The Elko Post Office will stay open stamp purchasing and other postal services.
The Postal Service says mail has declined by 25% since 2006.
