RENO, NV - Reno police have released the name of the man shot by a Washoe County sheriff's deputy November 10th near Gold Ranch in Verdi.
Police say shortly before 4PM, the deputy tried to talk to a hitchhiker, 27-year-old Michael Nelson Heil. The deputy says Heil had a gun and took off running, then pointed his weapon at the deputy, who shot Heil in his chest, groin and leg. The deputy's name hasn't been released; he is on administrative leave during the investigation.
Heil was in critical condition, but has been upgraded to stable, according to police, who are leading the investigation.
When the preliminary investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office for an initial determination as to whether the shooting was justified under Nevada law.
If the shooting initially appears justified, the deputy can be returned to duty, pending the completion of the investigation and a final determination as to justification.
