Perfect Way to Make Memorial Day Burgers

RENO, NV - There are some tricks you can do at home to make that backyard burger taste like you're at a gourmet restaurant.

Jordan Spenella with "Burger Me" let KOLO 8 News in the kitchen.

Spenella said first and foremost, make sure the meat is extremely cold before you put it on the grill. He recommends sprinking some salt and pepper ontop of both sides of the patty while it's on the grill. While your meat is on the grill, butter up the buns and put them on a skillet until they're golden brown.

Depending on the temperature of your grill, Spenella says timing is very important. For medium rare, he recommends letting the meat cook for about two minutes on each side. For medium, let the meat cook for three minutes on each side. For medium-well, well-done, let the meat cook for four minutes on each side. These times depend on the temperature of your grill.

"A good grilling tip for everyone out there is, you can always go by feel especially with the beef. The softer the feel, the more squishy, the less done it would be, the more tough it feels obviously the more it would be."

If you're looking to get a little healthier, you can try the alternative: a turkey burger or a veggie burger.

If you want your patty to have a lot of flavor, you can add some ingredients to make it taste better.

Spenella recommends adding sauteed pieces of apple,celery and green onion to the turkey meat.

Both veggie and turkey patties can be a little more delicate than a beef patty, so if you can, cook them in a skillet for a couple minutes before putting them on the grill.

Jordan says there's a secret behind making the perfect veggie burger.

"Extra virgin olive oil, because trying to form veggie burger you need something that will base that and keep them nice and you need something that keeps them nice and formed," says Spenella.

In their veggie burgers they use oats, kidney beans, spinach, basil, roasted red peppers and garlic. Something that goes good on veggie burgers: blue cheese, sauteed mushrooms and sauteed onions.

Now for the cheese, put your cheese on the patty then put it in a hot pan, put a little water in the pan then cover it for about 10 seconds, you're cheese will be melted perfectly!
