Pedestrian Hit by CHP, Run Over by Bus on US 50 Identified

The man killed when he was hit by a CHP officer on US 50, then run over by a bus, has been identified.

It happened around 12:44 a.m., Sun., when 21-year-old Alex Moore of Walnut Creek, Calif., was walking on US 50 in the left eastbound lane near state line. In the same lane, a California Highway Patrol SUV driven by Officer Joshua J. Varanini, hit the man and knocked him into the other lane where he was run over by a shuttle bus.

Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, Officer Varanini, tried to brake and steer his vehicle to the right to avoid the pedestrian, but was not successful. While driver of the shuttle bus, James Eastland, could not avoid striking the victim over.

The accident closed the highway for almost four hours. Eastbound traffic was rerouted out of the area via State Route 207, Kingsbury Grade, while westbound traffic was turned around near the scene. The highway was completely reopened at approximately 4:36 am.
