GARDNERVILLE, NV - A deputy called to a Gardnerville cemetery Wednesday on report of a dead body found himself on the receiving end of a shotgun.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, around 2:10 p.m., Deputy Rick Koontz, Jr. was dispatched to what was reported as a body outside of a white truck in the Gardnerville Cemetery. When the deputy arrived on the scene, he found 77-year-old David Pendleton at the cemetery near the described truck.
Pendleton was holding a shotgun in his hands.
Koontz says he spoke to Pendleton in an attempt to get him to place the shotgun on the ground. At some point, he says, Pendleton pointed the shotgun directly at Koontz, who then fired his duty firearm and killed Pendleton.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says it has had past contacts with Pendleton during which he has threatened to use weapons against civilians and law enforcement officers.
An incident investigation is being conducted jointly by investigators of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and State of Nevada Department of Public Safety.
A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Douglas County District Attorney’s Office. Koontz Jr., whose father is also a deputy, is a six-year veteran of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and has been placed on routine administrative leave.
