Northstar Waits for Snow, Makes Its Own

It's not the epic snowfall we saw last year at this time, but local ski resorts aren't worried about this season. In fact, the conditions right now are perfect for one local resort.

At Northstar, the weather couldn't be better for snow-making machines. And they expect to keep working them over the next few days so there will be even more snow to enjoy by this weekend.

Skiers and snowboarders at Northstar California aren't letting the clear skies dampen their excitement.

"It’s amazing! It’s perfect. It’s a bluebird day. We’re up here with friends. It’s a good time. All we’re doing is waiting for snow," says Adam Overby, a skier at Northstar.

So are the Tahoe-area ski resorts. But in the meantime, the folks at Northstar are having a blast. Thanks to snow-making machines blasting out fresh snow, the mountain is open top to bottom for skiers and snowboarders. The November crowd at local ski resorts may not be what it was last year, but neither is the snowfall.

"You know this is normal," says Jessica VanPernis, senior communications manager at Northstar, as she looks at the snow around her. "We’re basically going on snow-making snow and that’s basically what we have the capacity to do which is great – not a lot of resorts have that ability so things are looking really good. People are having a lot of fun with the snow conditions that we do have. And when Mother Nature comes, she’ll definitely help us out to open more terrain."

"Hopefully this weather will come so we can get some nice snow!" says Kris Peterson, a snowboarder at Northstar.

"We’re all going to pray for snow dances so hopefully it will be great," agrees Silvana Hildago, another snowboarder.

Northstar says it typically gets only 4 percent of its snow in November, so they're eager to see what the next few months bring. It recently planted $30 million in upgrades into the resort, including a chair lift called Promise Land. At this point, officials don't know when that will open - it depends on the amount of snow that falls in the next few weeks. The brand new Zephyr Lodge will open to the public on December 20.
