Carson City-State Treasurer Kate Marshall said today that the Southern Nevada winner of the first annual Nevada Prepaid Tuition Contest in which one new contract purchaser is being awarded one full year at the university or two years at a community college will be announced at halftime during the February 20 UNLV vs. Colorado State basketball game.
The contest is being run in conjunction with the 2013 Nevada Prepaid Tuition open enrollment period, which ends on February 28, 2013. The Nevada Prepaid Tuition program enables parents, grandparents, and other family members to lock in future college tuition rates at today's prices.
"Parents should act fast to take advantage of the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program benefit of locking in today's tuition costs," Marshall said. "College tuition and fees have gone up four times faster than the consumer price index. Purchasing a contract today provides peace of mind that you'll be ready when the time comes for your child to attend college. As our slogan says, 'Promise made. Promise paid!'"
To be eligible for this year's Nevada Prepaid Tuition contest, a new contract had to have been purchased by January 21, 2013.
Marshall said that in spite of the looming 11.99% increase in tuition at Nevada's universities, the College Savings Board which she chairs decided to keep prices stable for the 2013 open enrollment period. "We made a decision to do everything we could to keep prices as affordable as possible for Nevada families. In today's society, a college education is becoming more and more a necessity. We chose to not increase Nevada Prepaid Tuition prices this year so Nevada parents are better able to afford the dream of a college education for their child."
From newborns to ninth graders, parents have a variety of options to participate in this program. Parents can pay a lump sum, spread the payments out over five years with 60 equal payments, or pay each month from the time of enrollment until the child is ready to start college. The program is fully portable to private or public out-of-state colleges and universities, and may be transferred to another family member, including a first cousin.
Current Nevada Prepaid Tuition contract holders are invited to stop by the Nevada Prepaid Tuition program booth and pick up their free NV Prepaid Tuition/UNLV T-Shirt.
