CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Happy Birthday, Nevada!
The Silver State is celebrating its 147th anniversary, marking the day in 1864 when President Abraham Lincoln signed Nevada's declaration of statehood.
Friday is a state holiday, and all state and local governments, as well as schools, are closed.
The actual day is Oct. 31, but voters in 1998 approved a ballot measure making the day of observance the last Friday in October and
ensuring a three-day weekend.
The big bash is Saturday, when Carson City hosts the annual Nevada Day Parade.
This year's event will have more than 200 entries.
