Signed Sheriffs' Letter to Constituents
RENO - Nevada's seventeen sheriffs are coming together supporting the right to bear arms, but agree at least one law needs to be amended.
Every Nevada sheriff signed the letter, which was sent to constituents, as well as the media.
The letter states the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPAA, needs to be amended so health care providers can release mental health information to the national database for background checks.
The letter goes so far as to say HIPAA needs to be changed so it's allowed, or even mandated, that the mentally ill be identified on the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) database.
The sheriffs add they don't want to make criminals out of otherwise law abiding citizens. And they admit, there's no easy fix to the gun debate going on right now.
