Nevada Democrats Outnumber Republicans Statewide

RENO, NV - Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte North Carolina Governor Deval Patrick from Massachusetts laid it on the line for his party.

"If we want to win elections in November and keep our country moving forward, if we want to earn the privilege to lead, my message is this: It's time for Democrats to grow a backbone and stand up for what we believe!" said Patrick

We don't know about growing a backbone, but we do know registering Democrats to vote and getting them to vote is another way to win elections.

And statewide that's what's happening here in Nevada.

The most recent numbers from Nevada's Secretary of State show statewide there are more than 55,000 registered Democrats than Republicans.

A breakdown shows the biggest gap is in our state's most populous county--Clark where there are approximately 93,000 more democrats registered.

In Washoe County Republicans out number Democrats by about 3,400 people.

“The numbers don't surprise us at all, the demographic changes in the state of Nevada have clearly trended towards the democratic support,” says Fred Lokken, a political science professor with Truckee Meadows Community College.

Because of overall state registered voter numbers, some polls show Nevada still a battleground state, but leaning towards Obama.

But, what is also at stake, a U-S Senate seat where Republicans hope to take control.

“It will take a statewide success by either candidate to win this elections. Chose a strong incumbent from the house of representatives, Shelley Berkley.. But so far what we've seen is a race that is strong for her in Clark County where she is known,” says Lokken.

Senator Dean Heller, more known in the north, can feel good about the Washoe County numbers as well as the rural counties where Republicans outnumber Democrats.

But he needs to make significant end roads in Southern Nevada.

With more than 186,000 non-partisan voters up for grabs-you can understand why the national parities haven't turned away from the silver state.

You can register to vote on-line or by mail, the deadline is October 6th.

If you register in person you have a little more time, October 16th.
